The Association of Anaesthetists announce LMIC-based Editorial Fellowship starting September 2023.Two journals of theĀ Association of AnaesthetistsĀ āĀ AnaesthesiaĀ andĀ Anaesthesia ReportsĀ ā are offering an extension of their established editorial fellowship scheme.This new 12-month fellowship will support an exceptional trainee anaesthetic doctor based in sub-Saharan Africa with a desire to develop their editorial skills.
About World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA)
After the end of the Second World War anaesthetists found that international travel became more widely available. This coupled with a desire to learn from others and exchange experiences led, through a series of other meetings, to the establishment of an Interim Committee which met in 1953 and 1954. In 1955 the first World Congress of Anaesthesiologists was held at Scheveningen in the Netherlands and at the end of the Congress the WFSA was formed. 26 Societies were represented with a further 16 observing. Aim and Benefits of AWF Pilot Editorial Fellowship
Objective:
- Review and handle one to two manuscripts a week submitted toĀ AnaesthesiaĀ andĀ Anaesthesia ReportsĀ under direct supervision. You will spend four months with three Editors and learn how to construct decision letters and subedit accepted manuscripts for style before publication;
- Undertake a project with supervision from one or more Editors to be presented at a major Association of Anaesthetists international meeting with an aim to submit for publication;
- Contribute to an editorial published in one of the journals;
- Contribute at least oneĀ AnaesthesiaĀ DigestedĀ for publication inĀ Anaesthesia News;
- Attend editorial meetings held throughout the year (usually four) remotely
- Be involved with areas of special clinical interest as well as contributing toĀ #TheAnaesthesiaBlog, live broadcasts and podcasts;
- Compile a report at the end of the Fellowship, to be submitted to the Editorial Board and the Fellowās School of Anaesthesia/Deanery as appropriate (journal appraisal).
Benefits:
- Successful applicants will gain experience of working across both journals. There will be an honorarium of £2500 for the year with additional support for data costs and travel (for one in-person meeting per year).
- The successful applicant will also receiveĀ membership of the Association of AnaesthetistsĀ during this year with associated benefits and training opportunities.
Requirements for AWF Pilot Editorial Fellowship Qualification
You must:
- Be a qualified medical doctor with a M.MED degree or equivalent in Anaesthesia
- Be working in a training position or be within 3 years of starting a substantive (fully trained) position
- Be based in sub-Saharan Africa
Interview date, Process and Venue for AWF Pilot Editorial Fellowship
- The Fellowship will start in September 2023.
- Shortlisted applicants may be asked to undertake an editorial task or interviewed remotely.

How to Apply
- Include a one-page CV and copies of medical and anaesthetic qualifications
- Include a 300-word outline of a project that you wish to undertake with an Editor which should be relevant to the journals, publishing or editorial work more generally [1ā3].
- Be formatted in accordance withĀ AnaesthesiaĀ journal style, which can be found in the āinstructions to authorsā section of the journal website.
There is an option to extend the fellowship for a further 12 months if all parties are in agreement.
